Photo Composition

Cameras that are fully automated only can assist with taking a great picture. The camera can't help you compose the subjects. It is up to the photographer to either move the subjects or the camera to get the desired perspective. Arrange your subjects in a pleasing manner or move the camera until the image looks how you want.

Always try to fill the frame. Don't leave loads of head room (blank space above the subjects) and get close enough to make sure the subject is the main emphasis of the picture. A simple method to improve your photos is to check the four corners of the frame. If nothing distracts you from the subject, then take the shot. If something catches your eye, it will detract from the subject in the photo, so adjust it out of frame! Keep in mind that most cameras do not show 100% of the photo through the viewfinder. Get to know your camera and you'll know when something will creap in frame.

The photography Rule of Thirds is a carry over from the artist world. Using imaginary lines, your photo is divided into 9 equal sized quadrants by 2 vertical and two horizontal lines. Use the Rule of Thirds to organize your photo subject and your image will be nicely balanced. Once you master the Rule of Thirds, you'll need to decide when to break the rules, you photo rebel!
